Sign Permitting

A Sign Permit (PDF) is the certification by the Planning Department that a sign complies with the requirements of the Town of Burgaw Unified Development Ordinance (UDO). The goal of the ordinance is to:

  • Ensure that signs are designed, constructed, installed, and maintained so that public safety is not compromised
  • Provide for the safety of vehicular traffic by limiting visual interference
  • Allow for identification needs while not unduly detracting from the community's small town character
  • Promote the efficient transfer of information in sign messages

Projects Requiring Sign Permit

A sign permit must be obtained before erecting, moving, enlarging, illuminating, or substantially altering a sign.

There are signs that do not require permits; however, they do have regulations in terms of placement, size, and display time. Please see the Sign Permit Frequently Asked Questions (PDF) for more information.
